A shy high schooler, Shirley sought out a mentorship via Community Impact at Columbia University. She says the mentorship made a crucial difference by helping her to realize her own potential during the daunting college application process.

A year later, Shirley became a freshman at Barnard College, where she took courses in French and International Politics.

MEET PREET

I am Preet, I am studying in 6th STD in Joravasan school. All the children from my school attended Bal Health Mela at Shantaben Vidhyabhavan. I got my dental check-up, bad habit good habits workshop, use of first aid kit, good food-bad food and most important information on primary health care.

I am in 11th STD from Malvan village in Valsad. I love to operate computers, and the best opportunity I have to learn is at Shantaben Vidhyabhavan School. I can do a lot of things on the computer now!

MEET SALONI

Saloni is a 12th grader at our Shantaben Vidhyabhavan Science & Math Secondary School. Her father is a fisherman who is only home once every other year. She travels 12km to get to school from her village, each way. Saloni scored an overall 93% in 11th grade. She plans to further her studies to earn a BSc and PhD. She dreams of becoming a professor.

I have doing beadwork provided by the Desai Foundation Trust. I was unemployed before this. Since I learned this skill, I now earn at least Rs. 3000 per month. This is very helpful to support my children’s education, and I also have enough to buy things for myself. Earning for myself is the best feeling.

MEET RINA

Rina needed to provide for her family since her husband’s salary wasn’t enough. During visits to her in-law’s village, Rina stumbled upon our Asani Sanitary Napkin production center and decided that she would love to sell Asani pads to the women in her village. Rina was the very first member of our Asani sales team and sold over 100 packs of Asani in her first month on the job. Rina now feels empowered and motivates other women on the growing sales team.
